The Appalachian Trail

Appalachian Trail hiking map

Appalachian Trail Map, in the “original” PDF: a trail guide book.

Eighteen miles of the storied Appalachian Trail cross Harriman State Park to the north, from New York Route 17 to Bear Mountain Bridge, along the Hudson River, to the east.  Follow the white blaze.  You’ll be joining, in spirit at least, some   hikers who travel part (or all) of the Trail’s 2,200 miles, from Springer Mountain in Georgia, to Mount Katahdin in Maine.   Both ends of the Appalachian Trail have parking, at the Bear Mountain Inn at the easternmost Harriman end, and the Elk Pen parking area, west.

It’s not uncommon to meet Appalachian Trail thru-hikers — those traveling end-to-end in a season — at one of Harriman’s beautiful, rustic lean-tos, especially the West Mountain shelter, which is a short jaunt from the Appalachian Trail off the Ramapo Dunderberg trail.
